1. Octopuses have eight arms
Each arm can move with remarkable independence and is lined with suckers that help an octopus feel, taste and hold objects.
2. They are excellent at hiding
Many octopuses can change colour and texture to blend into rocks, sand and coral.
3. They have three hearts
Two hearts help move blood to the gills, while another pumps blood around the body.
4. Their blood is blue
Octopus blood uses a copper-rich molecule called hemocyanin, which gives it a blue colour.
5. They are very flexible
Because they have no bones, octopuses can squeeze through surprisingly small spaces.
6. They are curious problem-solvers
Octopuses can explore objects, open simple containers and remember useful solutions.
7. They move in more than one way
They can crawl along the seafloor and also jet through the water by pushing water from a siphon.
8. They use ink to escape
A cloud of dark ink can distract a predator while the octopus swims away.
9. Their suckers are sensitive
Suckers help an octopus grip surfaces and gather information about what it touches.
10. Young octopuses learn by exploring
Like little explorers, young octopuses investigate their surroundings to find food and safe places.
